Colorado is a great state for solar power, but finding the right solar company can be overwhelming. You want to choose a solar company that will be there for you and your investment in the years to come.

Why Go Solar in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is known for its beautiful trails and parks, a city sitting right at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Keeping these natural destinations beautiful is something Colorado is passionate about, as Colorado was one of the first states to implement a renewable energy portfolio. This means the state of Colorado cares about preserving the natural destinations that travelers love such as unique rock formations that can be found in places like Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods Park, The Broadmoor Seven Falls, and Cave Of The Winds Mountain Park.

Colorado Springs is a great place for going solar, in fact, Colorado is one of the top states in the nation for solar, ranked 13th in the nation according to SEIA. The state of Colorado has enough solar installed to power over 297,580 homes.

Between all the sunny days and all the incentives Colorado offers for going solar, it’s easy to see why solar in the state of Colorado is a great investment.

In addition, electricity prices are on the rise in Colorado with new decisions on time of use rates. As of 2020, electricity rates in Colorado will rise during peak times of the day., encouraging residents to consider sustainable options for energy like solar.

Wondering if solar is the right decision and curious about the options that make going solar affordable for homeowners like you? We’ll help by going through the great incentives the state of Colorado has for switching to clean solar energy.

Colorado Springs Solar Incentives

It’s clear to see that going solar in Colorado Springs is well worth the investment whether it’s protecting yourself from rising electricity bills, utilizing the abundant sunshine, or preserving the environment and beautiful landscapes. In addition, the state of Colorado makes it an easy decision with all the great incentives available for going solar.

In this section, we’ll go over all the financial incentives for going solar in the state of Colorado, including:

Federal Solar Tax Credit

By far the best incentive for going solar is the Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC) offered by the United States government. This federal tax credit is available to Colorado homeowners and offers a 30% tax credit on the entire cost of your solar panel system installation, including a solar battery. If your tax credits exceed your federal taxes owed, then the tax credit simply rolls over into the next tax year.

The 30% tax credit applies as long as the solar energy system is installed on or after January 1, 2022.*

Colorado Net Metering

Colorado hands out some pretty great incentives for going solar as well, including  a program called net metering. Net metering allows you to sell any excess electricity produced by your solar panels back to your utility company. They will then credit your account for this energy, which reduces your monthly bill (or gives you a credit for future months). In Colorado, the net metering policy was established in 2005 and then was expanded in 2018 to also include a solar battery backup.

The Colorado net metering policy allows customers with solar panel installations – and solar batteries-  to receive credits up to 120% of what their solar panels generate.

Colorado Springs Utilities offers a net metering program, as well as Xcel Energy.

If your provider is Xcel Energy in Colorado, your monthly credits can be applied towards your next energy bill. Customers of Xcel can decide what to do with their credits at the beginning of their contract. Customers can choose whether they want the utility to reimburse you or to roll it over. Other utilities provide monthly bill monetary credits. For more information about net metering with Xcel, read their Solar Rewards FAQ.

Colorado Solar Access Law

More good news if you live in Colorado: your Homeowners Association (HOA) can’t prevent you from adding solar panels to your home. If you’re subject to an HOA, you don’t have to worry because the law clearly states that home improvements that lead to producing renewable energy cannot be restricted. This is according to Colorado Revised Statute (CRS) 38-30-168 which states:

“A covenant, restriction, or condition, contained in any deed, contract, security instrument, or other instrument affecting the transfer or sale of, or any interest in, real property that effectively prohibits or restricts the installation or use of a renewable energy generation device is void and unenforceable.”

In basic terms? Your HOA can’t stop you from having solar panels installed on your home. Of course there are some restrictions, so be sure to consult a lawyer if you have any questions about this or need further advice.

Colorado Solar Rebates

Colorado has some great solar rebates, depending on your utility company and where you live. Here are a couple of examples, but be on the lookout for more in your area, and it never hurts to ask your local utility company if they offer any additional incentives for going solar.

EnergySmart Colorado offers rebates between $400 and $3000 to residents in Eagle Valley, Roaring Fork Valley and Summit County. Holy Cross Energy also offers a rebate of $750 for the first 6kW of their system, and on average comes out to around $4,500 for a 6000kW system.

In the state of Colorado, there is no sales tax on solar panels according to the Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Equipment. In addition, the Property Tax Exemption for Residential Renewable Energy Equipment keeps you from having to pay any additional taxes on the increased value of your house.

Step 1 of 4:

Do Solar Panels Increase Home Value in Colorado Springs?

Not only do solar panels save you money, but they also add value to your home.

Even the experts agree! In a comprehensive report done by the  US Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), they found out having solar panels installed to your home helps sell your home faster and get more money for it!

On average, solar panels add $20 of value for every $1 you save on your electric bill. So if you saved $200 a month on your electric bill with solar panels, you’d have an additional $4,000 of value added to your home.

And again in 2015 the Department of Energy and Berkeley Laboratory confirmed these findings with another study on the real estate market. After analyzing 22,000 homes, they found that homes with solar panels fetched a higher asking price than those without. About $4/watt, which comes out to be around $15,000 for residential, depending on your home and solar system.

In addition, solar panels can help your property spend less time on the market. In another study done by NREL, they found that solar properties earned about 17% more at closing, in addition to selling 20% faster.

Property Tax Exemptions for Solar Energy Sytems

Home improvements or additions to your home in Colorado may often hike up the amount of your property tax. But not in Colorado! Solar panels in Colorado are completely property tax exempt. That means all the value without having to pay additional property taxes for the solar panels installed on your home. According to Colorado law, 100% of the assessed value of the solar system is exempt from the homeowner’s property taxes.

How much do solar panels cost in Colorado Springs?

Assessing the cost of going solar can be overwhelming, between figuring out the size of your system, how much energy you need and any incentives available to you. To best understand the sticker price, these factors should be discussed with a qualified Solar Sales Specialist who can offer you an appropriate quote for your particular situation.

Read more about some of the factors involved in determining the cost of going solar.

The good news for you is that Colorado is a prime state for solar incentives that help to offset the initial price tag. In addition, with high electricity bills in Colorado, your solar system will pay for itself at some point and then will start making you money.
