How To Go Solar in Denver: A Guide to Solar Panels in Denver
Denver, the Mile High City, is a known tourist destination and situated just east to the stunning Rocky Mountains. Denver residents are passionate about the environment and preserving the beautiful land that makes living in Colorado so great. In fact, Denver ranks in the top 30 greenest cities in America. That’s why more than ever homeowners in Denver are searching for alternatives to dirty fossil fuels for their home energy needs.
The good news for Denver homeowners is that SEIA named Colorado as one of the top states in the nation for rooftop solar, ranked 13th in the nation, and Colorado already has enough solar installed to power over 297,580 homes.
Another little known secret about Denver is that even in the winter, it boasts around 300 days of sunshine per year! That makes going solar in Colorado an even better investment since you’ll be able to generate clean solar energy year round.
With all that sunshine and the incentives Colorado offers solar customers, it’s easy to see why solar in the state of Colorado is a great investment.
Another great reason to switch to solar is that electricity prices are on the rise in Colorado with new decisions on time of use rates. As of 2020, electricity rates in Colorado will rise during peak times of the day, encouraging residents to consider sustainable options for energy like solar.
Wondering if solar is the right decision for you? If you’re concerned about the sustainability of your current energy source, you’re in the right mind frame. Worried about the cost? Let’s take a look at some of the incentives that make going solar in Denver so easy and affordable.
Denver Solar Incentives, Tax Credits, & Rebates
Protect yourself from rising electricity bills, make that abundant Denver sunshine work for you, and work to offset your carbon footprint and preserve the beautiful landscapes of Colorado. These are all the best reasons for going solar in Denver, but wait, there’s more! Colorado also makes it easy to go solar with all the incentives available to homeowners like you.
In this section, we’ll go over all the financial incentives for going solar in the state of Colorado, including:
- Federal Solar Tax Credit
- Colorado Net Metering
- Colorado Solar Access Law
- Colorado Solar Rebates
- Property Tax Exemption
- Solar and the Worth of Your Home in Colorado
Federal Solar Tax Credit
By far the best incentive for going solar is the Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC) offered by the United States government. This federal tax credit is available to Colorado homeowners who purchase instead of lease their solar PV system, including a solar battery. The ITC offers a 30% tax credit on the entire cost of a solar energy system installation, including any solar storage.
To take advantage of the 30% federal income tax credit, your solar energy system must have been installed on or after January 1, 2022.*
Colorado Net Metering
Colorado hands out some pretty great local incentives for going solar as well, including a program called net metering. Net metering allows you to sell any excess electricity produced by your solar panels back to your utility company. They will then credit your account for this energy, which reduces your monthly bill (or gives you a credit for future months). In Colorado, the net metering policy was established in 2005 and then was expanded in 2018 to also include a solar battery backup.
The Colorado net metering policy allows customers with solar panel installations – and solar batteries- to receive credits up to 120% of what their solar panels generate.
The following utilities offer net metering programs in the state of Colorado:
Intermountain Rural Electric Association (IREA)
Xcel Energy: If your provider is Xcel Energy in Colorado, your monthly credits can be applied towards your next energy bill. Customers of Xcel can decide what to do with their credits at the beginning of their contract. Customers can choose whether they want the utility to reimburse you or to roll it over. Other utilities provide monthly bill monetary credits. For more information about net metering with Xcel, read their Solar Rewards FAQ.
Colorado Solar Access Law
More good news if you live in Colorado: your Homeowners Association (HOA) can’t prevent you from adding solar panels to your home. If you’re subject to an HOA, you don’t have to worry because the law clearly states that home improvements that lead to producing renewable energy cannot be restricted. This is according to Colorado Revised Statute (CRS) 38-30-168 which states:
“A covenant, restriction, or condition, contained in any deed, contract, security instrument, or other instrument affecting the transfer or sale of, or any interest in, real property that effectively prohibits or restricts the installation or use of a renewable energy generation device is void and unenforceable.”
In basic terms? Your HOA can’t stop you from having solar panels installed on your home. Of course there are some restrictions, so be sure to consult a lawyer if you have any questions about this or need further advice.
Colorado Solar Rebates
The great news for residents of Colorado is that you’re looking at some great solar rebates, depending on your utility company and where you live.
Here are a couple of examples, but be on the lookout for more in your area, and it never hurts to ask your local utility company if they offer any additional incentives for going solar.
EnergySmart Colorado offers rebates between $400 and $3000 to residents in Eagle Valley, Roaring Fork Valley and Summit County. Holy Cross Energy also offers a rebate of $750 for the first 6 KW of their system, and on average comes out to around $4,500 for a 6000 kilowatt system.
Colorado Solar Panel System Tax Exemptions
Everyone loves increasing their home’s value. But everyone could live without the higher tax bill that comes with it. You won’t have to worry about that in the Mile High state, though. Rooftop solar panels in Colorado are completely property tax exempt according to the Property Tax Exemption for Residential Renewable Energy Equipment, which keeps you from having to pay any additional taxes on the increased value of your house. In other words, any value your solar energy system adds to your house will not be reflected on your property tax.
Another awesome tax break in the state of Colorado is that there is no sales tax on solar panels according to the Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Renewable Energy Equipment. That means you also will not have to worry about large purchase sales tax when it comes to your solar renewable energy systems.
Do Solar Panels increase home value in Colorado?
Not only do solar panels save you money, they also add value to your home.
Even the experts agree! In a comprehensive report done by the US Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), they found out having solar panels installed to your home helps sell your home faster and get more money for it!
On average, solar panels add $20 of value for every $1 you save on your electric bill. So if you saved $200 a month on your electric bill with solar panels, you’d have an additional $4,000 of value added to your home.
And again in 2015, the Department of Energy and Berkeley Laboratory confirmed these findings with another study on the real estate market. After analyzing 22,000 homes, they found that homes with solar panels fetched a higher asking price than those without. About $4/watt, which comes out to be around $15,000 for residential, depending on your home and solar panel system.
In addition, solar panels can help your property spend less time on the market. In another study done by NREL, they found that solar properties earned about 17% more at closing, in addition to selling 20% faster.
How Much Do Solar Panels Cost in Denver?
Trying to estimate the cost of going solar can be overwhelming, between figuring out the size of your system, how much energy you need, and the solar incentives available to you. To best understand the cost of going solar, individual factors should be discussed with a qualified Solar Sales Specialist who can offer you an appropriate quote for your particular situation.

The good news for homeowners in Colorado is that you’re living in a prime state for solar incentives that help to offset the initial cost. In addition, with high utility bills in Colorado, your solar system will pay for itself at some point and then will start making you money.
How to Find Solar Installers in Denver, CO
- Expertise: Your solar company should have expertise in the solar industry. Another bonus is experience in roofing. A solar company with expertise means they’ve been open for more than a few years and have thousands of installations under their belt.
- In-house team: Many companies subcontract their installation employees. Companies who have in house installers are much more reliable and experienced than an outside solar contractor.
- Credentials: A reputable solar installation company will have all of the necessary licenses and permits, insurance policies and credentials needed for all areas they operate in. They should be listed on their website and easy to find. A company with all credentials will meet all of the state standards and is certified as a legitimate business.
- Reputation: Reading reviews is a great place to start. Keep an eye out for solar companies that respond to their customer reviews and respond in a professional and timely manner. Companies who care about their customers will be helpful and thankful to their customers. Another bonus is to look for a solar company that has won awards and been named in the top of their industry.
- Warranties: Warranties are a very important factor when considering solar installation companies. Many solar companies do not have reliable warranties. When buying an expensive system, you want to protect your investment with warranties and knowing you’re backed up by the company for years to come.
