Let’s take a look at what the Solar Energy Industry Association (SEIA) has to say about Florida and solar power:
-
- Florida ranks 4th in the nation for solar power
- There’s enough solar power to power over 687,000 homes
- West Palm Beach gets 238 sunny days per year – over 30 days more than the national average

What Solar Incentives Are Available in West Palm Beach?
Another question most people have when considering solar is how much it costs to go solar in Florida. This can depend on a lot of factors including where you live, the size of your home, how much energy you use and which panels you purchase. Find out more about the cost of solar.
Another major factor that determines the cost of going solar is the solar incentives available to homeowners. In Florida, there are quite a few incentives that make going solar affordable and an easy decision.
Net Metering
Florida Property Tax Exemption
Florida Sales Tax Exemption
Federal Solar Tax Credit
Net Metering in West Palm Beach
Net metering is one of the most important (and beneficial) regulations for solar array owners in Florida, because it allows you (the homeowner) to sell back the excess power your solar panels generate to the power company (Like Duke or Florida P&L,) crediting your account with them and can even get you a near-zero power bill!
Those credits can also come in handy when the sun goes down at night, or if you have a particularly cloudy day (and don’t have a backup battery,) you can draw on those credits and not come out-of-pocket for power used.
Property Tax Exemption
Yes, you read that correctly! When you add solar panels to your house, the overall value of your home goes up; but as an incentive for Florida residents to go green, Florida won’t tack on any new taxes to that added value. Period.
Sales Tax Exemption
Another thing to not pay for in West Palm Beach! Not only will you get more money for your home due to the increased value, but even BEFORE that, you won’t have to pay the sales tax on your new solar array (and batteries, if you choose.) We can think of a few different places in Rosemary Square we could spend that 6%!
The Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
Probably the biggest incentive to fire your power company is the ITC, or the solar tax credit. It could offset the cost of your residential solar panel array by 30%. That’s right – 30% of your ENTIRE purchase of home solar panels could be given right back to you as a tax credit from the government if you get your solar energy system installed by the end of 2032.* The other good news about that is, if you don’t use all the credit that first year, the remainder rolls over to the next.
The Florida Solar Rights Act
Florida Statute 163.04 forbids any binding agreement between HOAs or otherwise to prohibit a property owner from installing solar panels. Period. They can try to tell you where on your roof to put them (maybe the HOA doesn’t want them to be in plain view,) but if their desired location or requirements doesn’t meet an orientation to the south or within 45° east or west of due south, they cannot stop you from installing solar panels on your roof that provide the highest efficiency for you.
