North Carolina solar incentives, tax credit, & rebates

Most folks that consider solar want to know when their break-even point comes. That’s when the money spent on a solar energy system equals the amount you’ve saved by generating your own energy. There are two big factors in that calculation: How much you pay for your system, and the price you’d have to pay for electricity if you didn’t have solar panels. With the cost of electricity skyrocketing, breaking even comes faster. But what can really help get you there are incentives the government and local utilities offer.  For a look at all the local incentives in North Carolina, check out our blog here.

  • Federal solar tax credit – Starting in 2022, the federal government is offering a tax credit worth 30% of the cost of your solar system, including labor costs and batteries.*
  • Property tax exemption – In North Carolina, 80% of the value of your solar energy system is exempt from property taxes. In other words, if a solar energy system adds $10,000 to the value of your home, you only pay property tax on $2,000 of that amount.
  • NC solar rebate – Duke Energy, one of the largest energy companies in North Carolina, will pay its customers to go solar with a solar rebate. The program is on a first-come/first-serve basis, but if you qualify, they’ll issue a rebate of up to $0.60 for every watt of solar capacity you add to your home energy system, up to $6,000.
