Lots of people in the US are installing solar panels. And it makes complete sense when you think about all the benefits it brings you! Solar panels don’t just help keep the environment healthy (although that’s a pretty great thing). They also help you keep your wallet healthy, because they give you savings every month. Rather than having to pay the ever-rising rates of your utility company, solar panels allow you to use electricity that you’ve generated yourself. So you can keep your hard-earned money right where it belongs- in your bank account.

And if you think it’s just homeowners who are installing solar panels, think again! Some of the biggest, most well-known global companies are heavily invested in renewable energy. Apple, Amazon, and Target are not only massive companies that service people worldwide. They’ve also got the most installed solar capacity of all the corporations in the US! Together they have installed enough solar power systems to generate over 965 MW of electricity a year. And these are just the top 3!

Each of these companies has made commitments to use clean, renewable energy to power their operations. While this will certainly help these corporations increase their savings, it also means that nearly a gigawatt of electricity will be generated not from pollution-causing fossil fuels, but from green energy sources. To put it into perspective, 1 GW of electricity can power roughly 500,000 homes. And this is just the beginning of these companies plans to install solar panels.

Apple is so committed to renewable energy that all its global facilities are powered by 100% clean, renewable energy. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO said, “We’re committed to leaving the world better than we found it. After years of hard work, we’re proud to have reached this significant milestone. We’re going to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the materials in our products, the way we recycle them, our facilities and our work with suppliers to establish new creative and forward-looking sources of renewable energy because we know the future depends on it.”

Amazon likewise has a goal to become completely energy efficient. Their goal is to make all Amazon shipments net zero carbon, and 50% net zero by 2030. They’re well on their way to accomplishing these goals. And a huge part of that is solar energy. The company is installing solar panel farms both nationally, and internationally- an additional 329 MW of solar energy, in fact.

And Target has been no slouch in the solar department either. They have a goal to get 100% renewable electricity for their domestic operations by 2030, and set a goal of 60% by 2025. They’ve done that by installing 500 solar panel systems. Their goal was to do this by the end of 2019- and they succeeded. John Leisen, VP of Property Management at Target, said “At Target, we’re committed to making our operations even more sustainable to create a better future for our guests, team members, and the planet. Ambitious energy goals have helped us accelerate our progress and reach major milestones. And we’ll continue to invest in technologies, partners and resources to help us achieve even more.”

This is all amazing news for people following the growth of renewable energy industries like solar power. Just a decade ago, installing solar panels was something only the elite did. Today, solar panels are everywhere. People are realizing just how beneficial they are, and that includes multinational corporations. This is a great sign for the future of renewable energy.
