How to Choose a Solar Installer in Massachusetts
- Expertise: Your solar installer should have expertise in the solar industry. A company with expertise means they’ve established for more than a few years and have thousands of installations under their belt. Another thing to be on the lookout for is if the solar company has roofing experience. It’s good to know the company handling your solar installation for your house’s roof knows their way around roofs.
- Inhouse team: Many solar companies subcontract their installation employees. Solar companies who use in house installers are much more reliable and experienced.
- Credentials: A reputable solar installation company will have all of the necessary licenses, insurance policies and credentials needed for all areas they operate in. They should be listed on their website and easy to find. A company with all credentials will meet all of the state standards and is certified as a legitimate business.
- Reputation: Reading solar company reviews is a great place to start. Keep an eye out for companies that respond to their customer reviews and respond in a professional and timely manner. Companies who care about their customers will be helpful and thankful to their customers. Another bonus is to look for a solar company that has won awards and been named in the top of their industry.
- Warranties: Warranties are a very important factor when considering solar installation companies. Many solar companies do not have reliable warranties. When buying an expensive system, you want to protect your investment with warranties and knowing you’re backed up by the company for years to come.
Are solar panels worth it in Massachusetts?
The short answer? Yes. Let’s find out why. Here are some of the top reasons that residents of Massachusetts are choosing to have solar panels installed, making it a leading state for solar energy.
Stellar Energy Efficiency Scorecard
Massachusetts is one of the best states in the nation to go solar. For nine years in a row, Massachusetts was named the most energy efficient state in the nation. Although Massachusetts lost their title in 2020 to California, it’s still the 2nd in the nation. Their efforts to reduce energy use and transition to renewable energy is a testament to their ability to lead the nation when it comes to the future of energy.
Nation Leader in Solar Installations
According to Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Massachusetts is within the nation’s top ten. Coming in at #8, Massachusetts has enough solar installed to power over 485,429 homes.
Environmental Concerns
In order to keep Massachusetts land beautiful, residents are continuously looking for ways to reduce their impact on their surroundings. One of the ways you can decrease your carbon footprint while increasing self-sufficiency by installing solar panels on your home.
Decreasing Costs and Improved Technology
The costs of solar panel installations have come down significantly. There are plenty of ways to switch to green energy for your home that works for your budget. Our Solar Specialists are trained to help you make sense of it all and help you figure out a plan that works for your specific needs, as well as average costs for switching to solar in your area. Solar technology has made huge strides in efficiency and longevity too! More efficient solar panels mean that each square foot of solar panel can produce even more solar power.
Solar Battery Storage
Power outages whether routine or from a natural disaster can be devastating in some cases. If you’re concerned about power outages, now is a great time to consider a solar battery backup as an add on to your solar energy system. Solar energy batteries, like the Enphase Encharge, will take any extra solar power your panels produce and store it for you to use later. So even when the sun goes down, your home can run on clean, green energy. It’s also covered under the federal tax incentive as well as a few other state level incentives. Massachusetts Electricity Profile
Another compelling reason to go solar is due to the high- and rising- cost of electricity in Massachusetts. In fact, Massachusetts has some of the highest prices in the country, and the costs are on the rise.

Going solar can help you take back control of your energy and dramatically reduce your monthly utility bill. The future of energy is solar, don’t get left behind.
Massachusetts Solar Incentives
Massachusetts offers many solar incentives for homeowners looking to save money on their installation and beyond. Let’s go through them.
- Residential renewable energy income tax credit
- Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART)
- Net metering in Massachusetts
- Mass Solar Loan program
- Federal Solar Tax Credit
Residential Renewable Energy Income Tax Credit
Massachusetts is one of the states that has a substantial state tax incentive for going solar. Under the Residential Renewable Energy Income Tax Credit in Massachusetts, the owner of the solar energy system can get a 15% credit, up to $1,000, against the state income tax for the net expenditure of a renewable energy system (including installation costs) installed on an individual’s primary residence.
Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program
Massachusetts is way ahead of the curve with their aggressive solar programs such as the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program. Under this program, the state of Massachusetts will pay customers of Eversource, National Grid, and Until a fixed rate per kilowatt hour (kWh) of solar energy produced for 10-years.
If your system is under 25 kilowatts (kW), the rate will range from 29 to 31 cents per kWh, depending upon your location and utility.

Massachusetts Net Metering
One of the incentives for going solar in Massachusetts is a program called net metering. Net metering is a program in which you sell any excess electricity produced by your solar panels to your utility company. They will then credit your account for this energy, which reduces your monthly bill (or gives you a credit for future months). The rules for net metering are different depending on your utility company.
Currently, the following utility companies in Massachusetts offer net metering: Eversource and National Grid.
Massachusetts Solar Loan program
The Solar Loan program is a financing program that allows homeowners to get solar panels installed by making fixed, low-interest loan payments. This state-level program has made solar available to residents of Massachusetts that normally wouldn’t be able to own solar PV systems, leading to an expansion of solar energy in Massachusetts since 2014.
Federal Solar Tax Credit
The Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), offered by the United States federal government, is a tax credit of 30% of the entire solar system cost, including a battery system. The 30% tax credit applies as long as the home solar system is installed on or after January 1, 2022.*
Massachusetts Solar Battery Incentives
If you’re interested in adding a solar battery backup to your solar system, Massachusetts is a great state for it. In addition to the Federal Tax Credit that includes a solar battery, the SMART solar incentive also includes homeowners with a solar battery, which could save you even more. And if you were looking for even more reasons, as a Massachusetts resident, you could qualify for the National Grid Connected Solutions program which pays participating customers twice a year a rate for solar battery usage during peak demand response times.

Property tax exemption for solar panels
You may be aware that additions to your home can result in an increase of property taxes. The good news for Massachusetts residents is that solar panels are completely property tax exempt. That means you’ll get the value of having them on your roof without having to pay additional property taxes. In Massachusetts, 100% of the assessed value of the solar system is exempt from the homeowner’s property taxes.
Do solar panels increase home value in Massachusetts?
Not only do solar panels save you money, they also add value to your home.
Even the experts agree! In a comprehensive report done by the US Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), they found out having solar panels installed to your home helps sell your home faster and get more money for it!
On average, solar panels add $20 of value for every $1 you save on your electric bill. So if you saved $200 a month on your electric bill with solar panels, you’d have an additional $4,000 of value added to your home.
And again in 2015 the Department of Energy and Berkeley Laboratory confirmed these findings with another study on the real estate market. After analyzing 22,000 homes, they found that homes with solar panels fetched a higher asking price than those without. About $4/watt, which comes out to be around $15,000 for residential, depending on your home and solar system.
In addition, solar panels can help your property spend less time on the market. In another study done by NREL, they found that solar properties earned about 17% more at closing, in addition to selling 20% faster.
